BULK SAMPLE ANALYSIS

Bulk samples analysis identifies asbestos within building materials. The method used is based upon examination using stereo microscopy and polarised light microscopy.

Asbestos is identified by type of fibre; Crocidolite (blue), Amosite (brown), Chrysotile (white), Anthophyllite, Tremolite or Actinolite.

Where only a very small amount of asbestos is present (one or two fibres) this will be reported as “Trace”plus the fibre type.

Where asbestos is not identified “NADIS” is reported, that is,

“No Asbestos Detected in Sample”

Water Absorption Test: On occasion when it is difficult using accredited methods to identify a material as either cement or board, we can carry out an additional non-accredited test based upon the HSE published method which differentiates between the materials.

The test measures the amount of water a material absorbs in comparison to its dry weight.

This in turn can help inform a decision as whether working on a material requires an asbestos licence.

SOIL ANALYSIS

Undertaking soil analysis allows an employer to characterise any potential exposure to their employees, as required under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. Soil analysis identifies and quantifies asbestos fibres by type within a matrix of soil or aggregate. This is a combination of methods; microscopy, gravimetric analysis & fibre counting. Soil analysis is undertaken in 3 stages:

Stage 1
Identification of the asbestos types present.

Stage 2
Quantification of the asbestos present expressed as percentage of the supplied sample.

Stage 3
Total mass of free fibres expressed as fibres.
